Fused Dichroic Glass

Dichroic glass is a multi layered coating of quartz crystals, and metal oxides,(Aluminum, copper, silver, titanium, etc.) placed on glass using a highly technical vacuum depositing process. Once the Quartz, and metal oxides are vaporized onto the glass it is then fused with more glass in multiple firings in a kiln. The dichroic coating itself has no color. The colors are produced by light striking the glass. This process produces glass which reflects light of one color and transmits light of another. This causes an iridescent effect like you would see in tropical fish scales or the feathers of a peacock.

Dichroic is a greek word meaning two colors. When you view the glass from different angles the colors will change. Each piece of glass is unique and no two will ever be alike.

NASA originally developed dichroic glass for use in the face shields of their Space suits.
