What Is Talavera?

Our uniquely handcrafted Talavera products come from Dolores Hidalgo, Mexico. We import direct from the artisan Juan Manuel. Juan and his family have been handcrafting these beautiful pieces for many years.

Talavera del la Reina Spain is where the fine art of glazing fire baked clay began. It was sometime between the 15th and 16th centuries that Talavera pottery was introduced to the Mexican potters. The ancient techniques employed to make ceramics are still used today. The colors & patterns have evolved over the years giving brighter and more brilliant colors. The complete process takes 12 to 15 days. Once the clay is mixed it is either hand molded or placed in a plaster mold. When the clay is dry
it is lightly sanded and polished with a damp sponge to smooth out the irregularities. It is then placed in a glass fired kiln and baked at a temperature of 2000 degrees F. The pieces are then coated in enamel, hand painted and baked again to fuse the colors to the clay. This results in a high gloss finish which is very durable. The brilliant colors do not fade with time.
